There was a long, dull moment of waves and birds heckling. Sounds and sensations, the coolness of water, the pressure of sand and surf.

The woman opened her eyes, struggling on heavy, wobbly legs, staring down at her chainmaille-clad hands, blinking. She tore the metal gloves off, and then she pulled her feet out of the boots, leaving the things encased in the sand as she stumbled up and out of the pull of the tide. Off came the breastplate, and off came the rest of the armor, and she left it all where it fell, discarded silver upon the shore.

“Whoa, whoa,” she murmured to the mare. Dana, was it? The horse flared her nostrils at this woman who looked so like that woman, her woman. But it was not her woman. It was not, and the horse did not understand it, but she knew it, too, and she sidestepped the outstretched hands, rearing up, turning and racing, kicking up her heels over the beach and through the meadow and into the wood.

The woman watched her go, laughing a little, giddy, heady. She set off in bare feet then, down the path she had never walked but knew so well, knew by heart, the path that led to the cave along the cliffs.

The sorceress stood in the mouth of the cave, watching, waiting. And when the woman came around the curve in the path, Mariana stood on tiptoes, hands on hips, biting her lip and scarcely able to breathe.

But the woman, the muse, the creature, ran the rest of the way, swept Mariana up, brought her down to kiss someone else's lips, but now her lips, the muse’s lips, and she kissed her again and again and again until they were laughing and weeping and entwined together, limbs akimbo. Again and again, they embraced, and Mariana sank down to the floor of the cave, skirts mounded around her, head in her hands as she wept, the lonely years running down into the earth as the muse crouched down beside her, ancient as tide and salt, whispering into her hair, her ear, pressing lips there, and there again, telling her the truth, that it was finally all right, that it had happened. It had finally happened. They were together again, together for always. Forever.
